Your Guide for Tipping Trailers to Read Before You Buy

Much like a British restaurant, tipping is often pushed to the bottom of the priority list on the order of service for a job site. Though usually only present in the background, you have to understand the different types of tipping equipment you want to use before you even think about starting wood or stonemasonry work. Without the right tipping trailer, immovable debris after a job can surprise you with disaster when you can’t finish off a project upon its supposed completion.

In this blog post, you’ll quickly learn what tipping trailer equipment is, what to look for when choosing it and why Rock Machnery only stock one type.

When are Tipper Trailers Used?

When something is too heavy to be towed in a wheelbarrow, and not heavy enough to warrant being moved by a crane, a tipping trailer is used. Tipping equipment is used to move medium to heavy loads quickly and safely. For this reason, they’re almost always present in farming and agriculture sites and on large properties or landscape projects, where fragile and weighty cargo can be towed by a tractor or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) like a quad bike.

Types of Tipper Trailer

There are two principal types of tipping trailers: ATV and standard. The standard size is towed using a tractor or utility vehicle (UTV). These are used to handle mass amounts of materials like gravel, harvested crops, manure or debris with a hydraulic tipping system to dump loads without manual effort. A manually tipped ATV will be used for firewood, soil, animal feed or smaller loads that demand more careful handling.

ATV Equipment’s Unique Benefits

At Rock Machinery we only service ATV tipping trailers. This isn’t due to a lack of knowledge for other types, but because we recognise the specific value for ATV trailers in the rock and logging construction projects we specialise in. We favour the ATV trailer because it reduces costs for our clients, who are able to save on renting a larger trailer that costs significantly more.

Most often, it will be more cost-effective and safer to use ATV equipment than a standard variant in our customers’ cases. Though an ATV is smaller than a tractor, this makes it more nimble. It's also still capable of carrying heavy loads of up to 1,500 lbs in weight: over half a tonne. In more than a decade of work in this sector, we consistently find that the ATV and its associated agility outweigh the potential for heavier lifting of the standard model.

What to Check Before Buying

Before you buy, whether you’re using a standard or an ATV trailer, always ensure your required load is within the trailer’s capacity. Make sure the trailer isn’t too large for your site and its towing vehicle, and lastly, be certain that the quality of your product is reflected in its price. A second-hand trailer or one with visible defects could risk damage to your cargo, vehicle and yourself or others. It’ll end up costing more in the long run too.
